Business Ideas I Wish I Thought of #1 - Valleyschwag
By Chris on Jun 9, 2006 in Entrepreneurship
What do you get if you cross a “Book of the Month” club with all the free stuff tech companies give away as promotional items? The answer is Valleyschwag.
Tech companies give away huge amounts of stuff, for free, at conferences and the like. It would cost a fortune for any one person to go to all the conferences and bag free stuff from everyone. The idea of Valleyschwag is simple: they do the leg-work for you, gathering up all the freebies they can each month and sending it out to their subscribers. Simple yet genious.
In effect, they’re getting people to pay for free stuff, which is no mean feat. With prices starting at $14.95 a month (plus inexpensive postage) it could be seen as steep. I don’t think so. I believe you’re guaranteed to get a t-shirt every month, along with all the other schwag; $14.95 for a t-shirt isn’t a lot to pay.
As with many “Web 2.0″ things there were teething problems - packages went out late, for one, but the quality of the pack was worth the wait. Imagine the look on your co-worker’s faces when you get a burlap parcel delivered to your desk first thing in the morning!
Fellow Brit blogger and Entrepreneur, Burt, received his Schwag Pack in the mail too. Read his entry for pictures of what you get along with his thoughts. For the record, I got the same selection, except for one sticker. All have been plastered onto my iBook.
